The “American Gaming Association” spent $1.7 million lobbying for Internet Gambling

The American Gaming Association, which is a trade group that represents the casino industry, spent $1.7 million in 2007 lobbying the federal government on Internet gambling legislation.
Lobbyists are required to disclose activities that could influence members of the executive and legislative branches under a federal law that was enacted in 1995.
The association opposes legislative proposals that would pre-empt state authority to regulate gambling and spent $800,000 on lobbying in the second half of the year according to a disclosure form posted online last week by the Senate’s public records office.
The group remained neutral on a law passed by Congress in late 2006 that attempts to crack down on Internet gambling by banning the use of credit cards to pay for online bets but it supports legislation that would fund a federal study on the impact of Internet gambling.
Betandgame’s accounts transferred to JAXX UK

French Court Of Appeal – EC Law Supersedes French Law

The French, perhaps not unsurprisingly, wanted to have things their own way as far as online gambling was concerned and they banned advertising and arrested bookmaking executives that had allegedly violated French gambling laws.
Last month however the Court of Appeal of Versailles shifted the burden of proof onto the French authorities, who must now show that their regulatory framework is “consistent, proportionate, and justified”.
Sigrid Ligné, who is the secretary general of the EGBA (The European Gaming and Betting Association) said, “We are delighted with this decision. It is an important one and comes in the general context of the commitment taken by the French authorities to propose a controlled opening of the French gaming market by March 2008″.
The EGBA seems to be slowly winning the fight against ‘national gambling protectionism’ and it’s nearly March so let’s keep our fingers crossed regarding France!
Finland considers nationalizing online poker!

Around the end of January 2008, Finnish Minister Stefan Wallin suggested that the government should run an online poker service in order to better control the market and to protect Finland’s citizens.
This suggestion came just one week after a government commissioned academic report recommended that the government force financial institutions and/or online poker sites to refund losses incurred by online poker players.
The minister was quoted as saying, “It is difficult to halt the rise in the popularity of online poker. It would be better to offer players a legal and responsible alternative. Responsibility would mean setting an 18-age limit and requiring players to identify themselves”.
Sweden’s Online Poker Battle

The Swedish Supreme Court has just ordered the Court of Appeal to test the compatibility of the country’s lottery law with existing European law.
Two of Sweden’s biggest daily newspapers, Aftonbladet and Expressen have been battling for years to overturn a District Court ruling which bars them from accepting foreign gaming advertisements.
The ruling by the Supreme Court means that the Court of Appeal must now hear the case against the newspapers, that last month published an open letter to the E.U. Internal Market’s Commissioner Charlie McCreevy insisting that he act against the Swedish authorities over the advertising ban which they claim breaches Articles 12, 43, and 49 of the EC treaty.
This move also came after the European Commission recently instigated proceedings against the state-run Swedish poker monopoly Svenska Spel which continues to exclude E.U. licensed poker companies from operating in the country despite doing so itself.
Proceedings are already under way against Sweden for its position on sports betting and now poker is being formally targeted.
The authorities will now have two months to show that their rules are compatible with EU law.
